The most
intriguing part of the Chapter 2 in ARCS was the topic on how kairos is a
principle o invention, in the sense that it stirs up a perspective that is
already there. The knowledge of the past of that topic and what was done to get
the stance that topic is on now. For example the breast cancer awareness with
pinkwashing, this topic has gone through many different forms to gain awareness
of. What caught my attention in the text was “A rhetor inventing by means of
kairos needs to pay attention to the world around him.” This is a way of saying
that the surrounings of someone connected to rhetors should always be in
awareness of what and who they are. The example of women posting their bra
color online in regards for spreading breast cancer awareness to most people
does not make sense. This gets the word out that breast cancer is a real thing
but what does this campaign do in the long run. The problems caused in a
rhetoric person is the annoyance campaigns like this cause. Knowing the
position of people in a campaign like this is how well someone is prepared in a
rhetoric.
I think
campaigns only are directed towards certain groups of people. For example in
making awareness for breast cancer and posting jus the color of your bra
online. There will be groups of people who have no idea what is going on. Then
their will be groups of people, males for instance who are not wearing a bra
and do not participate in helping the campaign. Problems like these causes
arguments and then hen arguments form. Another way of looking at this instead
of forming arguments and disagreeing with the way the campaign is promoting
breast cancer awareness. The ARCS book touches on how even if someone disagrees
with the campaign the fact that people become curious about the viral bra colors
on Facebook causes the topic of breast cancer to be brought up. With that being
said the campaign was working because awareness was spreading around the
digital space and crossing peoples mind that breast cancer is something out
there that is a big deal. This causes other rhetors to want to learn about the
history and the cause certain topics have on each other.
